Agency Snapshot: Department of Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) leverages resources within Federal, state, local, territorial, and tribal governments, coordinating the activities of multiple agencies and programs into a single, integrated mission focused on protecting the American people and their homeland. DHS and its many partners continue to strengthen the homeland security enterprise of shared responsibility to better address and defend against dynamic threats. In 2003, DHS was created via the merging of 22 separate agencies and offices into one Cabinet-level Department. Since then, DHS has taken significant steps to create a unified and integrated Department, emphasizing accountability, transparency, and leadership development to improve mission performance. Furthermore, DHS is implementing a comprehensive, strategic management approach to enhance its acquisition, financial, and human capital management.
