Social Security in the Palm of Your Hands

The Supplemental Security Income Mobile Wage Reporting (SSIMWR) System

When many people leave their homes, they generally take three things with them – their keys, their wallet, and their smartphone. Smartphone use is on the rise. No longer just for talking or texting, smartphones are now the tool of choice for more complex transactions, such as shopping and banking.

To meet growing expectations and to join the ranks of other government agencies, Social Security developed the agency’s first transactional mobile application – SSI Monthly Wage Reporting.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients are required to report their monthly wages because changes in their wages may affect the payments they are due.

Released in August 2013, the Supplemental Security Income Mobile Wage Reporting application allows certain SSI recipients, and their spouses, parents, and representative payees, to access a fully automated way to report monthly wages. They can access the app through an Android or Apple mobile device (iPhone). The app helps to reduce improper payments and to reduce the number of customers visiting field offices, which reduces in office wait time

While the public can still report monthly wages over the phone using a toll-free automated system or via mail, the rapid adaptation of this new mobile app is leading the way on how the public wishes to report their monthly wages. Recipients or their representative payees can also sign up for monthly email or text reminders to help them remember to report their wages timely.

This past year, Social Security set an ambitious goal to increase our SSI overpayment accuracy rate from 93.3 percent at the end of FY 2010 to 95 percent at the end of FY 2013. This app supports the agency’s SSI priority goal through its user-friendly interface and convenient access.

Also, a core part of the President’s Management Agenda involves improving customer service across the government. The wage-reporting app promotes better customer service by providing a convenient electronic method of self-reporting that can be accessed anywhere and anytime. This supports the customer service cross agency goal, by making it faster and easier for individuals to complete transactions and receive quality services.

This secure app does not disclose or store any personal information on the mobile device. The application has received an American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) score of 91, making it one of the highest rated applications in government.

On average, customers complete their transactions in one minute or less, and our customers have submitted 206,145 wage reports so far.
